Many New Jersey townships now require permits to remove trees above a certain diameter – typically 4 to 8 inches DBH (diameter at breast height). Permit requirements and replanting rules vary by municipality. As part of our service, Big Timber handles the permit process for you so you don’t have to navigate township ordinances on your own.

We’re also registered with the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts. Hiring an unlicensed or uninsured tree company puts you on the hook for property damage, injury liability, and potential code violations. We provide a current certificate of insurance upon request before any work begins.

Cleanup is included in every removal we quote – that means hauling away branches, logs, and wood chips. Stump grinding is a separate service and isn’t automatically included in standard tree removal. When you do add it on, we grind stumps 4–6 inches below the surface so you can plant grass or landscaping over the area. If you’d like to keep firewood or wood chips, just let us know and we’ll leave them onsite. Every estimate clearly itemizes what’s included – no surprises.

Late winter through early spring (roughly February through April) is generally the best time for tree removal and major pruning. Trees are dormant, the ground is firmer for heavy equipment, and leaves don’t block sightlines for the crew. That said, dangerous, dead, or storm-damaged trees should be handled immediately regardless of season – waiting can lead to property damage or injury.

Many trees that look damaged can actually be saved with proper pruning, cabling, or treatment for disease and pests. Removal is generally recommended when a tree is more than 50% dead or diseased, has a cracked or hollow trunk, is leaning dangerously toward a structure, has major root damage, or is dropping large limbs. As certified tree experts, we always evaluate whether a tree can be preserved before recommending removal – we’ll never push you toward a service you don’t need when a less invasive option will do the job.

In New Jersey, if a healthy tree falls onto your property due to a storm or “act of God,” your homeowner’s insurance typically covers the damage and removal. However, if the tree was visibly dead, diseased, or hazardous beforehand – and the neighbor was notified – they may be liable. We recommend documenting any concerning trees on neighboring properties in writing. Big Timber works directly with insurance adjusters and provides documentation to support claims for storm-related tree damage.
